Aikido Summer in Berlin 2026 Through the Eyes of a Participant

I have been looking forward to Aikido Summer in Berlin, which takes place at the last weekend of August, since the spring. The Berlin seminar is organised by Heidi Grot, Jorma Lyly, Gaston Nicolessi and Martin Švihla, who invite four guest teachers each year. This year, the guests were Zeev Ehrlich, Sonja Sauer, Iveta Sudorová and Luis Mochon. Unfortunately, Jorma was unable to attend this time for health reasons.

The seminar takes place on two tatami in separate dojos that are close to each other. Two classes run simultaneously, so everyone can put together their own programme. Over the four days, participants can train with different teachers and explore a variety of styles and approaches to Aikido.

I set off for Berlin by car on Thursday morning. After arriving, I head straight to the dojo, where the first classes are already getting underway. The day continues with catching up with friends, training and an evening meal at a pizzeria. On Friday and Saturday, I move between the two tatami, gradually making it to classes with all the guest teachers. There is dynamic practice, work with the centre, tanto and juwaza. Each class offers a different way of working with movement, timing and a partner. Some techniques stay with you straight away, while others need more practice and exploration.

During the training, I also get to know other participants, including a group of Ukrainian Aikidoka returning from a seminar in Belgium. People from different countries, schools and levels of experience come together on the tatami.

The evening barbecue provides another opportunity to connect. Conversations naturally revolve around Aikido, seminars and different approaches to practice. Aikido Summer in Berlin is therefore much more than a series of classes. It is also a place to build friendships and strengthen connections within the Aikido community.

Sunday brings the final training session, after which I lend a hand with tidying up. Once we’ve enjoyed a final burger, I set off on the journey back to Prague.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the seminar. Let´s hope I’ll make it back next year!
